Conshocken-based Rufo Companies is listing the site for $6.6 million, while proposing to build 200 new apartments on the parcel.

The former Gretz Brewery building in Olde Kensington has been listed for $6.6 million, and a Conshohocken developers is seeking approval to build 200 apartments in advance of a potential sale, writes Ryan Mulligan for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

In 2019, the Rufo Companies, which owns the historic property received permits to redevelop the property with 220 units. It is now reapplying to renew the permits, with revisions that include reducing the number of apartments to 200.

In addition to the residential units, the proposal includes five different commercial spaces that total about 5,500 square feet. The parcel spans about 30,600 square feet.

Rufo Companies leaders said the firm is currently working to restore the facade of the dilapidated former brewery.

“The point is to get it developed, that’s the exciting part about this,” said Tony Rufo, Sr.

The building was listed on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places in November 2018. The building’s historical designation means any construction would have to be an adaptive reuse development.

“It’s a great opportunity with the development that’s going on there and this is a historical piece that is different from all of the other stuff,” Tony Rufo Jr. said.

The revised proposal will be presented to the city’s Civic Design Review Committee on Tuesday, September 3.
