The culinary arts will be a big part of the new Delaware County Community College campus being built at the former Archbishop Prendergast High School site.

A culinary arts facility will be the biggest part of a multi-million dollar education and workforce development center being built by Delaware County Community College at the former Archbishop Prendergast High School in Drexel Hill.

The facility, set to open in 2026, will feature two state-of-the-art kitchens for students to develop the culinary skills that will get them right into the workforce, writes Justin Udo for KYW Newsradio.

“It gives all the local businesses first dibs at the graduates,” said Delaware County Community College President Dr. Marta Cronin. “It puts them on our advisory committee to make sure we’re giving those students the skills that they need and sending them out into the world.”

Money for the culinary arts program at the Drexel Hill campus comes from hotel tax funds.

“The funding also gives the students scholarships, opportunity to go if they don’t have the money and they want to get a degree or some sort of training in culinary arts or hospitality,” said Cronin.

Delaware County Council Chair Dr. Monica Taylor said the facility will help rejuvenate the hospitality industry in Delaware County, which was hard hit by the pandemic.
