Billy Carberry, an 8th grader is being deemed a hero for his quick-thinking to perform the Heimlich on a choking classmate.

Billy Carberry, an 8th grader at Our Lady of Calvary School in Northeast Philadelphia, can be considered a hero, writes Cherise Lynch for NBC 10 Philadelphia.

When he saw his Pre-K classmate was choking, he dropped everything and leaped into action to help out.

It was during lunchtime when Carberry noticed his fellow student, Christopher, was choking. During the incident, he was waving his hands in distress while his face turned red.

Carberry performed the Heimlich on his classmate, and within seconds, a piece of fruit leather dislodged, and enabled him to breathe again.

He had learned the Heimlich maneuver during his training as a Junior Lifeguard with the Wildwood Beach Patrol.

“I learned a lot about safety and how to help others,” Carberry said.

After performing the heroic efforts, teachers, parents, and Wildwood Beach Patrol Captain Ed Schneider all commended him.

He also received an award.

“A great deal of credit goes to Junior Lifeguard Instructor Jack Rauchut and his team for teaching junior lifeguards how to recognize dangerous situations,” said Schneider. “Billy is a kid who paid attention and prevented a critical incident.”
