Plans to Upgrade Trenton-Mercer Airport Begin Despite Protests from Some Local Residents
Work on the long-awaited plans to enhance and expand Trenton-Mercer Airport, first announced in 2018, has finally begun, writes Lacey Latch for the Bucks County Courier Times.
The plans for a new terminal were approved by the Federal Aviation Administration in 2022, but construction only started around a month ago on the replacement of the Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting Station.
The two-story fire station will cover 20,000 square feet with five apparatus bays. It is just the start of a much larger update to the aging structure costing around $200 million.
However, not everyone is pleased with the upcoming upgrades. Trenton Threatened Skies, a nonprofit group made up of residents from both Bucks and Mercer counties, oppose what they describe as ‘reckless expansion’ at the airport for years.
The group believes that these upgrades will bring expanded flight schedules with larger planes and altered flight paths which will disrupt residents’ quality of life and also threaten their health.
The organization filed a legal challenge in an effort to stop the construction of the new terminal, but it was rejected in January by a federal appeals court in Philadelphia.
