Media Borough Now a Sister City to a Korean Community

By

A ceremony Thursday outside the Delaware County Courthouse officially makes Media Borough and Boseong-gun in the Republic of Korea sister cities, tied together by one man, Dr. Philip Jaisohn, reports the Daily Times.

Attending were federal and state lawmakers, Delaware County representatives, and representatives from Media and Boseong-gun.

Under the signed agreement, the two communities will explore collaboration in the fields of medicine, education, economic development, educational exchange programs for youth, technology, arts, culture, and tourism.

Boseong-gun is in the far south of South Korea, hundreds of miles from Seoul. It’s population is just under 40,000.

The communities are connected through Dr. Philip Jaisohn, who came to the United States in 1884 from Boseong-gun, making his home on Lincoln Avenue in Media.

Jaisohn is the first naturalized Korean American citizen, the first Korean to receive an American medical degree, and was in the first interracial marriage on record between a Korean and an American in the United States.

He championed the Korean independence movement, and was heavily involved in the development of the Republic of Korea.

The Philip Jaisohn Memorial House in Media highlights his life and accomplishments and is open to the public.
