Philadelphia Gains New Portal, Connecting City to the World
Philadelphia recently installed a new Portal at LOVE Park, providing the city with a window into the world, write Joe Brandt, Scott Hezlep, and Marcella Baietto for CBS News Philadelphia.
The new portal was relocated from New York City’s Flatiron Plaza and allows people to connect with three European countries: Ireland, Poland, and Lithuania. It flips from location to location every three minutes or so.
“We are going to lean in and give really big ideas a chance in this city and make sure we’re doing it in a way that everyone across neighborhoods all play a part,” said Michael Newmuis, the city’s 2026 director coordinating plans for Philadelphia’s active role in celebrating the 250th birthday of the United States.
According to Portals.org, the Portal connects multiple others worldwide through a 24/7 livestream. In addition to three current international countries, another is coming soon in Brazil.
One of the people behind the project is a Philadelphia native.
“I used to skate in this park on my way to crew practice down to boathouse row in the 80s,” said Joseph Callahan.
The Portal sculpture didn’t cost the city anything.
