South Philadelphia Man, Taj Shuib, Credits Philly Sports for Helping Save His Life
As a South Philadelphia native, Taj Shuib has been a big supporter of each of the four major sports teams who call the neighborhood home, writes Dave Uram for KYW Newsradio.
If Shuib had to place each of the teams in order, it would go: Flyers, Phillies, Eagles, and Sixers.
“I’m an African American man, so it’s, like, different because, you know, in our culture, it’s like, you know people don’t like hockey,” Shuib said.
He became a fan of the sport as a fifth grader at Paul Laurence Dunbar Public School in North Philadelphia.
Over the years, Shuib has developed a first-hand knowledge and memory of all four major sports teams.
His love and knowledge of Philadelphia sports, as well as his faith, also helped save his life.
In April 2022, Shuib had a mild heart attack, a pulmonary embolism, and a stroke all on the same day.
“Because it would put me in a happy place,” Shuib said of Philly sports. “When I’m sitting there depressed, worrying about if I’m gonna be okay, and all that, it was just such a motivation. Every time I watch any Philadelphia sports, I can’t sit down, I’m always screaming at the TV.”
