How Main Liner Payal Rajasekaran is Redefining South Asian Jewelry for Everyday Wear
Payal Rajasekaran, founder of Modern Devi Designs on the Main Line, blends South Asian traditional jewelry with minimalist, everyday wear, writes Kaitlyn McCullough for Main Line Today.
Inspired by her heritage and personal experiences as a first-generation South Asian American, Rajasekaran’s jewelry symbolizes strength, resilience, and joy. Her creations are a tribute to her culture and the beautiful jewelry that many women wear.
“‘Devi’ means ‘goddess’ in Sanskrit,” said Rajasekaran. “The name honors women as well as my heritage. My aim is to use jewelry as a vehicle to inspire other women to find joy in the present moment.”
Some of the key designs include lotus flowers to represent femininity and the strength to conquer anything a woman sets her mind to. In fact, her own name Payal translates to an anklet. She honored the name by making a piece with anklet bells that has become of the bestselling items in her collection.
Despite some challenges, including moving and motherhood, she has built a supportive community on the Main Line and aims to continue growing her brand through local connections and events in the area.
“A lot of the success so far has been through friends of friends and word of mouth, and I think that there’s something so awesome about that,” she said. “…I think just supporting other local businesses, specifically supporting other women, is so important.”
