Conestoga High School Senior Teaches Adolescent Girls Around the World

By

Zara Samdani, a Conestoga High School senior, has been teaching adolescent girls around the world through the Lemons Learn nonprofit, writes Bill Rettew for The Daily Local News.

Samdani and her sister, Hiba, a Princeton University sophomore, have been working with a team that offers tutoring to girls in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, and Turkey.

Samdani started the online multi-national nonprofit three years ago. The organization has since grown to 40 tutors — 20 of whom are American — and 80 students.

The sisters’ parents are Pakistan natives. On one of her trips to the country, Samdani noticed a very big wealth disparity and that there were not enough education resources.

“A lot of students didn’t have as strong an educational background,” she said. “It’s rewarding to see what we teach them and (for them to) apply it to their daily lives.”

The students are tutored in English using Zoom and international calls.

Teaching students through Lemons Learn has also offered Samdani a good glimpse into foreign cultures.

“It’s interesting to see how my family and parents have taken things from the Pakistani culture and how we practice that here,” she said.
