The PA Turnpike Commission is looking to collect on unpaid toll bills, reports Alyshia Hercules of MSN.

Last fiscal year, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which dissects through Montgomery County, grossed $1.755 billion in total toll revenue. Of that, 6 percent is unpaid by drivers.

According to the commission, most of these unpaid tolls come from the toll-by-plate customers rather than EZ-Pass.

“Toll evasion is simply an issue of fairness,” said Crispin Havener, assistant press secretary of the PA Turnpike Commission.

The most common Toll-by-Plate charge for customers is $1.90, following a 5 percent toll increase in July 2023.

Some drivers fear that they are paying for those who don’t. “Maybe that’s why they’re trying to up the prices so that anyone that is paying ends up being charged more,” said Oscar Seda who owns an automotive company.

Since the Turnpike switched to electronic tolling following COVID, the percentage of unpaid tolls has remained consistent and falls within the national average.
