This Philadelphia Neighborhood is the City’s Most Walkable
The Philadelphia region has a plethora of neighborhoods that offer walkability and a transit service good enough that you can follow a low-car diet, with one of them right here in the city, writes Sandy Smith for Philadelphia Magazine.
Manayunk was once a mill town, but it has since become better known as the place where college students go to tie one on — which is appropriate considering that the Lenape dubbed it “the place where we meet to drink.”
In addition to plenty of bars and restaurants, Main Street in Manayunk offers many unique local shops.
Additionally, the neighborhood has been host to the annual Manayunk Arts Festival for the last 35 years. During the event, around 300 artists turn the street into the largest juried outdoor art fair in the region.
Manayunk is also home to the Venice Island Performing Arts and Recreation Center, which hosts a theater festival and the annual Sing Us Home Festival.
Thanks to its rowhouses that climb the steep hill going up from the Schuylkill, Manayunk has the look and feel of a European hill town.
Manayunk has a Walk Score of 81, which makes it one of the city’s most walkable neighborhoods.
