Historic Newtown Theatre Undergoes $1.1 Million Renovations
The historic Newtown Theatre is undergoing a $1.1 million transformation this summer, writes Jeff Werner for The Patch.
Located on North State Street, the theater is set for extensive upgrades aimed at revitalizing this community landmark.
The ambitious project includes a $600,000 overhaul of the balcony, introducing brand new seating, hardwood flooring, and enhanced aisle lighting.
The balcony’s capacity will increase to 250 seats with the removal of the projection booth, replaced by an open area for a soundboard and a new $50,000 digital projector.
This change aims to maximize space and improve the viewing experience. The basement is also being revamped, with new unisex toilets added and the space enlarged to accommodate more patrons.
A standout addition is the half-million-dollar concert lighting system and video wall, set to transform the auditorium’s front.
Donated by a single patron, this cutting-edge technology will significantly enhance concert experiences.
Fundraising efforts continue, including a campaign allowing patrons to dedicate new balcony seats in tribute or memory of loved ones.
The project aims to cement the theatre’s status as a premier venue for concerts and tribute bands. Renovations are expected to wrap up by early September.
