SEPTA’s tiny Wissahickon Transportation Center, which serves about 7,000 riders each day, is about to undergo a massive expansion, writes Mike DeNardo for KYW Newsradio.

SEPTA broke ground last week to start construction on the $45 million project.

The center is currently used by eleven bus routes. It is just big enough for one bus to pull in and loop around before passengers can start to board.

“When they make the turn, it’s literally too crowded,” said a rider. “If it’s opened up, it would be better.”

SEPTA’s leaders were joined by Mayor Jim Kenney at the ceremonial groundbreaking on a nearly four-acre site adjacent to the existing center.

“We didn’t even have enough room for all of our buses to turn around,” said SEPTA general manager Leslie Richards. “This project is going to bring overall safety, as well as get people to where they need to go.”

The new and improved Wissahickon Transportation Center, which is expected to be completed in 2025, will boast larger, ADA-compliant boarding areas along with break rooms and restrooms for bus operators.
