Philadelphia is currently searching for a location to place an intercity bus station near 30th Street, which is something many residents have long been hoping and advocating for, writes Meir Rinde for Billy Penn at WHYY.

Philadelphia was recently awarded a $90,000 Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission grant “to evaluate three pre-identified potential locations for the intercity bus terminal within the 30th Street Station area.”

According to DVRPC, a consultant will perform a feasibility analysis, choose a preferred site, and develop preliminary designs.

Additionally, the project will “greatly emphasize stakeholder outreach and engagement.”

The need for a new intercity bus facility became urgent last summer, when Greyhound closed and sold off the bus station building on Filbert Street that had been used by carriers for decades.

However, this does not guarantee that a new terminal will open near 30th Street Station, according to the Office of Transportation and Infrastructure Systems and the Department of Planning and Development.

“The city/OTIS recognizes that we need to plan for a permanent location,” said the agencies. “The 30th Street Station area tends to come up as a possibility and we are interested in studying it further.”
