A Formula on How to Format Your About Section on LinkedIn
In previous articles, I have discussed theories and philosophies on approaching the About section on LinkedIn, but I still need to provide a formula.
To summarize some main points in a previous article on the About section:
- Make it skimmable and scannable with the 2600 characters you are allowed to use
- Use all capital letters to create section headers
- Don’t use Unicode as it’s visible to the human eye but not readable on all platforms and devices because it’s code
- Copy and paste your bullet points from a Word document (not a Google doc) since LinkedIn will not generate bullets
When you set up your About section, view it on a desktop and a mobile device to make sure you like the way it looks as a responsive website when it shrinks to a handheld device.
- Don’t have long, dense paragraphs of black text (as I certainly won’t read it!)
- Add emojis to make it fun to read and visually pleasing to the eye
When telling your story in your About section, there will be people who will:
- Not read it at all
- Will skim and scan
- Will read it in detail
So, consider not having dense paragraphs. Make the content the “just right” length and strategically use white space, bullet points, keywords, and emojis.
A FORMULA FOR CONSIDERATION
Title of what you do and what problems you solve without using fluffy adjectives that are your opinions. Think of important keywords within two lines.
