100-Year-Old WWII Veteran Abner Younger Honored with Congressional Gold Medal
100-year-old World War II veteran and Montgomery County resident Abner Edward Younger is being honored for his service as one of the original Montford Point Marines, according to 6 ABC.
In recognition of the 80th anniversary of the Marine Corps’ first Black recruits, ABC Owned Television Stations recently aired “Our America: Mission Montford Point,” which shines a light on the nearly 20,000 Black men who joined the last armed service to desegregate. Younger’s service was pivotal in ending racial segregation within the military.
During the ceremony, Younger received the Congressional Gold Medal, one of the nation’s highest civilian honors, along with three additional medals.
