PHA Has Developed Several New Business Owners in Philly, Thanks To Its Entrepreneurial Fellowship Program
The Philadelphia Housing Authority has been able to help over 40 residents start or grow businesses in the Philadelphia area, writes Michaelle Bond for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
In 2021, the PHA launched a six-month entrepreneurial fellowship program where residents are able to learn budgeting, cash flow management, marketing, and other skills.
They also get help establishing their companies and getting licenses and receive up to $3,000 as a small business grant and up to $2,000 to reimburse them for business expenses.
“This is a real opportunity that sets up our residents to succeed in the real world by becoming their own boss,” said Kelvin Jeremiah, president and CEO of PHA. “PHA’s mission is to open doors. Not just to housing but also to economic opportunity.”
One of the many residents who has benefited from the program is Reshay Kennedy, the owner of Nuri’s Sweet Treats. Kennedy sells desserts, including vegan and sugar-free options at pop-up events and is working to get into farmers markets this summer.
PHA hopes to soon open a place near its North Philadelphia headquarters where PHA residents can set up to sell their products at a nominal cost. The agency hopes to begin construction by the end of the year.
