Inside the New Dual Supermarket and Toy Store in Philly’s Chinatown
A new Asian grocery store and toy shop recently opened in the heart of Philadelphia’s Chinatown neighborhood, writes Heather J. Chin for Billy Penn at WHYY.
The ground floor toy store is named You & Me, while the basement grocery, kitchen, and beauty goods store is named EnJoy Market.
The store offers a wide array of sweet and savory snacks, frozen food, drinks, lunch and kitchen supplies, beauty products, and more. There are also Gashapon claw machines, stuffed animals, and jewelry.
In addition to the items for sale, the store also has piped in K-pop and C-pop music tailor-made to appeal to Asian American millennials and Gen Z customers.
A small cafeteria-style restaurant in a corner of the basement is also slowly being constructed.
The fact that You & Me doesn’t offer fresh produce means the store isn’t competition for the main Asian supermarket along North 10th Street, as well as South and Northeast Philadelphia. It instead has a broader selection of non-perishable items.
The market and toy store adds another layer of vibrancy and economic strength to Philly’s Chinatown as it continues to get back on its feet from the COVID-19 pandemic, anti-Asian hate, and other challenges.
