Ethan Mollick, a professor at the Wharton Business School, has become quite the expert on AI technology, and uses his expertise to advise policymakers and executives at leading corporations.

Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania professor Ethan Mollick has become the go-to authority on AI for the White House and many top corporations, writes Christopher Mims for The Wall Street Journal.

Mollick had been obsessed with ChatGPT even before it was fully released. His interest only intensified after November 2022, when it was made available to the public.

Mollick has always immersed himself in new technology and started sharing discoveries he made while experimenting with it, including the findings from his Wharton students, who use ChatGPT in his classes.

As he was one of the first embracers of large-language models and delved so deeply into the technology, he soon became the main source of information on AI for both policymakers and corporate leaders.

He does not charge for his consulting work, even though he meets with major companies’ leaders two to four times a week.

He is also quick to point out both the good and bad sides of the technology.

“There is not a single large-scale general purpose technology that does not have upsides and downsides, and part of my message has been that we have agency right now, to call certain things out as being bad,” said Mollick. “And we need to be doing that.”
