Comcast obtained a $61 million grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Broadband Infrastructure Program. It will be used to expand its reach and increase internet speed for businesses and customers.

Comcast will be broadening its horizons for both businesses and residential customers throughout the region thanks to a new $61 million grant, writes Ryan Mulligan for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The tech conglomerate received the funding from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Broadband Infrastructure Program to expand its network for homes and businesses across 158 municipalities.

Dan Bonelli, senior vice president of Comcast’s Freedom Region (Greater Philadelphia, New Jersey, and northern Delaware), said the company sees opportunity to expand its geographic footprint in the broad region as part of a nationwide push for Comcast to amplify its presence in less-populated areas.

Comcast Business previously announced it was upgrading its internet speeds for customers nationwide, and in some cases, tripling speeds for businesses.

“This is definitely a competitive environment and we’re always looking to add valued,” said Bonelli. “This is an example of where we continue to invest in our product services and network to provide the best connectivity to our customers.”

Comcast lost 31,000 residential broadband customers and 3,000 business customers last year, in addition to losing another 65,000 between the two segments in the first quarter of 2024.
