Bryn Mawr interior designer Brittany Hakimfar never leaves the walls of her client’s houses feeling empty, and she even sometimes helps design items that will end up on display, writes Paul Jablow for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

“You can’t design a beautiful space with blank walls,” she said.

Once, she rummaged through her client’s storage area until she found a needlework piece made by her late mother, thinking it would look perfect placed over the bar.

For other clients, as well as for her own Bryn Mawr home, she sometimes has paintings commissioned specifically to fit the overall aesthetic of the house. She does this with help from Jay Gutnick, an entrepreneur who matches artists and clients.

He helps more on the consulting side of things.

For their home, Hakimfar and her husband, Ben, wanted an abstract to place on a stairwell to tie together the upper and lower floors of the home. They chose Canadian artist Laurie Skantzos based on her previous work, and were very pleased with the result.

“It’s almost like a wall sculpture,” said Gutnick.
