N.Y. Times: Opera Philadelphia Appoints Anthony Roth Costanzo As Next General Director, President
Anthony Roth Costanzo, one of opera’s biggest stars, will soon lead Opera Philadelphia as its next general director and president, writes Javier C. Hernandez for The New York Times.
He will officially begin his tenure in June.
It doesn’t happen often that an artist in his prime will also be working as an administrator.
“I’m really interested in how I can have the most impact,” said Costanzo. “And there’s only so much you can do as an individual artist.”
He noted that he would continue to perform widely even as he works to reshape Opera Philadelphia, which has struggled to recover from the pandemic.
Stephen K. Klasko, Opera Philadelphia’s board chair, spoke on why Costanzo stood out among a list of 40 candidates for the role.
“He’s enthusiastic, he’s positive, and he sees our future as being an entity that goes beyond opera,” Klasko said.
At Opera Philadelphia, Costanzo will oversee fundraising, business strategy, audience development, community initiatives, and artistic planning.
He began his relationship with Opera Philadelphia in 1996 at age 14, when he performed as a shepherd boy in a production of Puccini’s “Tosca” starring Luciano Pavarotti.
Costanzo will succeed David B. Devan, who announced last year that he would be leading the company this spring after 13 years.
