As a result of an increase in traffic violations over the past several months, the Philadelphia Police Department has launched a new 30-day traffic enforcement initiative along North Broad Street to increase safety.

The Philadelphia Police Department has launched a new 30-day traffic enforcement initiative along North Broad Street, reports Jeff Keeley for FOX 29.

The initiative was launched as a result of an increase in traffic violations over the past several months.

Violations range from disregarding traffic signals, double-parking, and driving in the wrong direction, among others.

“These reckless actions have put the safety of our citizens and visitors at risk,” said Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel. “This initiative is designed to address these concerns and create a safer environment for everyone traveling along this busy corridor.”

To this end, the department plans to dedicate resources to increasing police visibility and enforcing traffic laws.

The new initiative will focus on three key areas.

The first area is reducing crashes and fatalities, as statistics show that between April 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024, there were 1,601 crashes involving 52 pedestrians and nine fatalities.

The second area is deployment and visibility, ensuring police personnel will be present throughout the corridor to proactively enforce traffic laws.

The third area is enforcement strategy with a zero-tolerance approach toward violations.

The overall goal of the initiative is to make North Broad Street a safer corridor for everyone.
