The Dive and Watkins Drinkery, two long-running South Philadelphia bars are up for sale as owner Jonn Klein aims to retire by the end of the year, writes Ali Mohsen for Billy Penn at WHYY.

“I’ve put so much of me and my life into both of these places. But … I’m at a point where I just need to be done,” said Klein.

The Dive opened in 2005, with Klein purchasing the three-story venue, then called Low Bar.

It has since developed a reputation as an old-school shot-and-a-beer spot for younger crowds, and also one of the last remaining smoking bars in the city.

Watkins Drinkery opened in 2010, and is a two-story wood-paneled corner spot previously known as Bell Rosa II.

Klein, who was born in Philadelphia, has worked in the service industry since his early teen years.

“I grew up watching Cheers, and I legit wanted to be Sam Malone,” Klein said.

As he’s endured his share of ups and downs in the industry, Klein believes it’s the right time to move on.

While he expects the new owner to bring a major overhaul to The Dive, he hopes Watkins Drinkery continues as something close as it currently is.
