New North Penn School District Vending Machine Program Promotes a Love of Literacy

By

Vending machines in the North Penn School District don’t all just cater to kids’ munchies. One recently installed at A.M. Kulp Elementary School has books for purchase, writes Terra Sullivan for CBS Philadelphia.

Students use coins they receive for good behavior to pick a new book from the machine stocked with books written for students in kindergarten through sixth grade.

The books were purchased with the help of Title I funding. Eventually, these vending machines will be found in schools throughout the North Penn School District.

“Having the book vending machine in the front lobby of our school provides yet another avenue to get books in the hands of students, helping to bridge the gap between engagement and literacy,” librarian Alyssa Nedorezov said in a statement.

“This allows students to build upon their own personal libraries at home, encouraging good reading habits in all aspects of their lives.”
