To celebrate Black History Month, FYI Philly put local Black-owned businesses into the spotlight, report Ducis Rodgers and Alicia Vitarelli for 6abc.

Two Locals Brewing Co. in University City is owned by brothers Richard and Mengistu Koilor, and is the first Black-owned brewery in Philadelphia. The Koilor brothers started homebrewing eight years ago and now have a space of their own that will make it possible to expand the range of beer that they can offer, partnering with Liberty Kitchen for a lunch and dinner menu.

WIN WIN Coffee is preparing to open a new cafe in Kensington’s Jasper House. The business sources all of its coffee exclusively from the African diaspora since there are so few Black and Brown people in the industry despite the crop being grown in Black and Brown countries, said CEO Nikisha Bailey.

When that coffee goes to market in a few months, they say it will be the first time anyone in the U.S. has tasted the beans.

Meanwhile, in November, owner Dakota Stanley opened a small boutique-style restaurant, 721 By DSC, in West Philadelphia that serves up family soul food recipes with a modern take on American cuisine.

The restaurant provides a small, intimate dining experience, fun events, and mocktails.
