Philadelphia Teenager, Nathanael Barlow, Takes Home Top Prize at 2023 Amateur Night at the Apollo Competition
Nathanael Barlow, a 16-year-old from Philadelphia, won the top prize at the 89th Amateur Night at the Apollo competition last month, writes Eric Nixon for WHYY.
His rendition of “For All We Know” by Donny Hathaway sealed the deal as he went home with a $5,000 check.
“When Nathanael was announced the winner of the Apollo, as his father, I was just so overjoyed and excited because here’s a 16-year-old kid that has found a significant place in space … through the use of his God-given talent,” Omar Barlow, Nathanael’s father, said.
To get to the finals of the competition, Barlow had to win three semi-final rounds held throughout the year.
Prior to entering the Apollo competition, Barlow made a name for himself as a local rising star and singing sensation.
He performs as part of the gospel choir at the New Covenant Church of Philadelphia in Germantown.
Despite winning the competition, Barlow is determined to remain humble in his approach.
“I’m really moving step by step, not rushing my journey or going at an unnecessary speed,” Barlow said.
All in all, he plans to continue working hard and feed his artistic passions.
