North Philadelphia Native Tierra Whack is the Star of New Hulu Documentary, ‘Cypher’
November 24 marked the release date of a new Hulu documentary titled, “Cypher,” which chronicles the life of rapper Tierra Whack, writes Larisha Paul for Rolling Stone.
The official trailer for the documentary quantifies the premise surrounding Whack’s rise to fame.
Originally from North Philadelphia and growing up an introvert, she’d often write to help herself deal with her insecurities.
A class assignment was the catalyst for Whack discovering her love for rhyming.
That love for rhyming led her to her career as a rapper.
“Tierra Whack rose to fame rapping on a Philadelphia Street for a YouTube channel … Years later, while documenting her astronomical rise, questions arise about who is filming whom and whether being seen is a desirable and unavoidable part of fame,” a synopsis of the documentary reads.
Given her introverted nature, Whack has spoken about her reluctance to fully entering into the spotlight.
“I started off really shy … Even now, before I go on, my anxieties are bad. Then I get onstage and turn into a different person,” she said during a 2019 interview.
The documentary goes into detail about how Whack is able to make the difficult adjustment.
