North Philly Native, Therapist Sarah-Ashley Andrews Wants to Change the Mental Health Conversation
Sarah-Ashley Andrews is a multi-faceted individual with grand plans of transforming both the public education and mental health landscapes, writes Kristen A. Graham for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Andrews grew up in North Philadelphia.
While in college at Bloomsburg University as a communications major, she came to the realization that she was fighting her true purpose.
She ultimately left Bloomsburg to enroll in Lancaster Bible College’s Center for Urban Theological Studies.
Then a tragedy happened as a good friend of hers died by suicide.
“He dies and I’m like, ‘I don’t want this to happen to anybody else,’” said Andrews.
This inspired her to found Dare 2 Hope, a nonprofit with a mission to make mental health services more accessible in underserved communities.
Andrews has since earned an undergraduate degree in biblical studies and human services at Lancaster Bible College, a master’s degree in counseling from Lincoln University, and then began working as a therapist.
This year, Andrews debuted Philadelphia’s first mobile therapy van.
She also brings her background as a mental health professional to the education field, where she is the youngest board member of the School District of Philadelphia.
“I just wanted to be able to bring a fresh voice, a fresh perspective,” said Andrews.
