Philadelphia Developers and Universities Advocate for More Transportation Options Amid Major Development Projects
There are many major development projects taking shape across Philadelphia, and as a result, conversations about transportation have been taking place, writes Paul Schwedelson for Philadelphia Business Journal.
Developers and universities are searching for ways to incorporate more transportation options, with increased service and incentives for public transportation, expanded roads, added parking, and more as options that are currently on the table.
At the Philadelphia Navy Yard in South Philadelphia, Ensemble Investments, Mosaic Development Partners, and PIDC are working with SEPTA and exploring how to increase public transit accessibility.
Drexel University, which is located in a transit-rich location, heavily promotes the use of public transportation.
“Philosophically our point of view is we need over time to continue to incentivize the use of mass transit,” said Alan Greenberger, Vice President for Real Estate and Facilities at Drexel.
The conversations with SEPTA are ongoing, with added bus routes, improved access, and expanded weekday service as among the top changes that could occur in the coming months and years ahead.
“It’s critically needed … There’s got to be a more robust transit solution,” said Kate McNamara, PIDC’s senior vice president of Navy Yard planning and real estate development.
