Dr. Mira Irons was appointed President & CEO of the College of Physicians in 2021. She has now resigned.

Mira Irons is returning to work where she previously spent 15 years of her career, writes Rosa Cartagena for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

She is going to serve as the Park Gerald Chair in Genetics & Genomics and Associate Chief of Genetics and Genomics at Boston’s Children’s Hospital

The new role marks the end of a two-year tenure as President & CEO of the College of Physicians, the Mütter Museum, and the Historical Medical Library.

Irons’ appointment in 2021 was historic in nature, as she became the first woman to serve as college president in the 236 years since it was established.

Her brief, but eventful, tenure was highlighted by her oversight of the institution’s efforts to recover from its pandemic losses.

She also oversaw the efforts to expand the college’s footprint on 22nd Sreet, which correlated with its $9.3 million purchase of two historic buildings nearby.

Future plans include expanding its educational programming, community services, and meeting space for medical professionals.

“Dr. Irons arrived at a time of great change for our organization,” said Julia Haller, chair of the College of Physicians board, in a statement.

In the interim, a triumvirate of medical fellows will lead the College while the search for a permanent successor gets underway.
