‘I Just Swore by Ginger’: Society Hill-Based Ginger Beverage Company Enjoys Breakthrough Year
Ginja Snap, a Philadelphia ginger beverage company formed by Shaakira DeLoatch in October 2020, is among the latest cohort of Santander’s Cultivate Small Business Program held at Temple University, writes Lisa Dukart for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
DeLoatch first got the idea of making ginger drinks when she had a sore throat. She accidentally created a highly concentrated ginger concoction when she stepped away from the stove for too long. She drank it and immediately noticed a difference in her throat.
“From that point on, I just swore by ginger,” she said.
DeLoatch formally launched in the market in September 2021, after spending a year refining the business model and decided to take on the business full-time at the start of this year. Through August, she has seen her business double compared to the same time last year. She projects that business will have at least tripled by the end of the year.
Most of the growth followed her move to a commercial kitchen space at Old Pine Community Center in Society Hill. This allowed her to place her products on the shelves of her first retailers.
