President Joe Biden paid a visit to Port Richmond in Philadelphia last week to make the announcement that a $7 billion clean energy program will be launching in select U.S. states, writes Matthew Daly and Marc Levy for NBC 10 Philadelphia.

The money will go toward establishing seven regional hydrogen hubs to help reduce fossil fuels with cleaner-burning hydrogen as an alternative energy source.

“As a clean fuel, hydrogen complements the role played by other clean energy sources, like wind and solar, to help the U.S. reduce emissions in energy-intensive sectors of the economy: steel and cement production, heavy-duty transportation, and shipping,” said the White House in a statement.

The seven hubs, which will include projects in 16 states, are expected to spur more than $40 billion in private investment and create tens of thousands of jobs, including high-paying union jobs.

The projects selected are based in California, Washington, Minnesota, Texas, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Illinois.

The Philadelphia-based Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub is among the selected projects to create regional networks of hydrogen producers, consumers and infrastructure through electrolysis.

It will receive $750 million to do so in Philadelphia, New Jersey and Delaware.
