A multi-year project to renovate the restrooms at Philadelphia International Airport took another step forward Tuesday at a groundbreaking in Terminal A-East, starting Phase 5 of the renovations.

Philadelphia airport bathrooms have been undergoing renovations since 2012, upgrading facilities some travelers have called “dingy,” writes Anana Perez Castells for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The nine-part restroom project is expected to be finished by 2028.

When completed, the airport will have another 13,000 square feet of bathroom space across all terminals and 35 more stalls.

To date, 16 bathrooms have been renovated.

“As traffic continues to rebound, we need to continue to make the necessary infrastructure investments to ensure Philadelphia International Airport remains a world-class facility,” said Atif Saeed, PHL CEO.

Phases 5 through 9 will upgrade 30 bathrooms, build two new ones, create five lactation rooms, add 49 gender-neutral bathrooms, three larger adult assisted-care restrooms, create four new pet relief areas, and upgrade existing bathrooms to be compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act.

New Terminal A bathrooms will have smart and touchless technology to reduce energy and water use, said Api Appulingam, PHL’s deputy director of aviation and capital development.
