Shannon Maldonado had been thinking about the idea of a Yowie Hotel for four years before she finally opened the doors of this boutique location for guests, writes Sydney Gore for the Architectural Digest.

As both a founder and creative director, Maldonado approached the project by allowing herself to explore her curiosities, no matter where they lead her.

She aimed to create a space that would feel like a gallery but also have warm touches and quirky details.

She created the Yowie Hotel in partnership with the team from The Deacon in Philadelphia, a former church that transformed into a hospitality space, and Dye House in Rhode Island.

The hotel is situated in a prime spot on South Street in Queen Village. It features 13 suites, a flex studio, a retail shop, and a concept café, Wim. The hotel’s interior is covered in artwork from local artists and makers such as Noorann Matties and Elizabeth Loux. And nearly all of the decor is for sale.

It has quickly become the perfect place for a much-needed staycation for locals.

“We’re the neighborhood guest room,” said Maldonado.
