The new documentary “Sigma Sound” puts the spotlight on Sigma Sound Studios, a Center City establishment that was the source of some of the most memorable music ever recorded, writes Ian Bush for KYW Newsradio.

Many know that Sigma Sound Studios welcomed artists such as The O’Jays and Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, but not many realize that David Bowie and Robert Palmer, among many others, also recorded there.

“Once Sigma Sound perfected it, everyone wanted to come to the source,” said Bill Nicoletti, director of the documentary. “They wanted to capture that sound. They couldn’t get it anywhere else.”

At Sigma, nobody cared about color or creed. All that counted were chops. The person in charge of the whole operation was  Sigma founder Joe Tarsia. He is the start of the movie, along with the tunes that were heard around the world but originated at 212 N. 12th Street.

Stars featured in the movie include Patti LaBelle, Gamble & Huff, John Legend, and many more.

A preview screening of the movie will be held at the Kimmel Center on September 23 as part of the Fall Arts Fest.
