Center City Continues to Recover, Moves Closer to Pre-pandemic Numbers
According to a Center City District report “Building Back A More Diverse Downtown,” Center City continued to steadily recover in June and July, with key numbers moving closer to pre-pandemic levels.
During that period, pedestrian volumes hit 92 percent of 2019 levels. The robust recovery was primarily driven by residents and visitors.
The number of workers also increased in June. It rose to nearly 100,000, which is 76 percent of June 2019 levels.
Workers reached 57 percent of the 2019 level within the West Market Street office district, which is a post-pandemic high.
The average daily population in Center City’s core went up to 384,300 in June, which is an increase of 2 percent from 377,000 in the previous month.
The June population recorded a daily average of 64,300 residents, 97,900 non-resident workers, and 222,000 other visitors, such as tourists, shoppers, or anyone who visits Center City for business or leisure.
These trends clearly indicate that Center City Philadelphia has not reached a plateau in regards of returning to office. But as hybrid work patterns continue to evolve, the return to office in Center City is gradually increasing.
