Wawa, the Eagles Autism Foundation, and Popcorn for the People are partnering to produce popcorn and employ people with autism and developmental disabilities.

Wawa is going into the popcorn business for a good cause, writes Anana Perez-Castells for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Wawa, the Eagles Autism Foundation, and Popcorn for the People announced Sunday that a popcorn facility will open by early 2024 where a Wawa was closed in 2021 on Ninth and South Streets.

Popcorn for the People is a nonprofit that employs people with autism and developmental disabilities.

“We are thrilled to join hands with Popcorn for the People and the Eagles Autism Foundation to provide even more individuals with the chance to pursue a fulfilling career,” Dave Simonetti, senior director of store operations for Wawa, said.

About ten people will work at the facility initially, increasing to 50 by the end of the first year.

Wawa will redesign the former store and pay building expenses.

Nouryon, a chemicals business, has donated $500,000 for popcorn-making equipment.

The facility won’t be open to the public but will produce popcorn that will be sold at some Wawa stores in butter, kettle, Chicago-baked cheddar, caramel, and dark chocolate espresso flavors.

Besides the new popcorn facility, the Philadelphia Eagles will also open a Popcorn for the People concession stand at Lincoln Financial Field.
