Celebration Marks Start of Transformation of North Broad Street PECO Showroom Into Youth Trade School
A groundbreaking celebration last month marked the start of a $25 million redevelopment project that will turn the old PECO appliance showroom on Broad Street in North Philadelphia into a youth trade school, writes Kyle Bagenstose for the Hidden City.
The three-story structure was constructed in 1930 and designed by John T. Windrim. It is located at 2309 N. Broad Street, surrounded by ornate Victorian neighbors.
Its exterior features a flattened rectangular facade along with six faux-doric columns as well as floral embellishments.
Several dozen people gathered to mark the occasion of the start of the redevelopment, including politicians, benefactors, architects, and teenagers wearing hard hats and black hoodies. They will call the building their home in the future.
Once the transformation is completed, it will be the new headquarters for YouthBuild Philadelphia Charter School. The program lasts for two years and offers some of the most at-risk young people in Philadelphia a new shot at careers in various fields, including healthcare, culinary arts, and the building trades.
“This represents opportunity, and it represents hope,” said State Representative Malcolm Kenyatta.
